All Things Aging: Professional Care Managers as an Objective Resource

Tuesday, March 25, 5 – 6:30 pm

Contact SIG Program Coordinator Jan Nickerson by March 16 to register for in-person attendance and by March 24 to register for Zoom attendance.

We’re all getting older. Some of us are anxious about the future, because we don’t know what health issues we might face, and who would be there for us, helping us navigate healthcare options. We hope we can stay in our home but recognize that living alone can become isolating. And what if simple tasks like paying the bills become prone to errors? We don’t know where we would get help. When someone suggests hiring a care manager, we wnder Ark! What is a care manager?!  What do they do? Is that the same as a patient advocate or _____?”

Join us to hear Lisa Laney define and describe what care navigators, care managers, patient advocates, and case managers do.  You’ll learn how to interview and choose the appropriate professional and skillset to assist you in meeting your unique goals. You’ll develop a toolbox of resources for future use in terms of your physical environment, social environment, and your health. Lisa will conclude with thoughts about how the landscape for aging in place will evolve over the coming decade.

Lisa Laney obtained her undergraduate degree in social work from Appalachian State and her master’s degree in social work in Health and Aging from UNC-CH. Her 37-year medical social work career includes diverse roles including home health, palliative care and leadership roles at CarePartners. A Professional Care Manager, Lisa founded Mountain Area Premier Care Navigation and is an active member and former board member of Aging Life Care Association. Lisa co-founded and owns a caregiver registry, Choice Care Your Way which matches high quality caregivers to clients in need. She has grown the caregiver pool to 170 while serving a client base of around 100 clients on any given day.  For more, see www.premiercarenavigation.com and www.aginglifecare.org

Email Jan Nickerson at JanNickerson@gmail.com to RSVP for in person attendance (by 3/16) or via Zoom link (by 3/24). The location is at AmeriHealth Caritas at 216 Asheland Ave on the South Slope (south of downtown).

The Thriving in Community SIG explores issues around aging including aging in place and end of life issues: legal, financial, philosophical and emotional. Informational exchanges and personal sharing are part of each meeting.  Zoom sessions are recorded and are limited to current OLLI members and invited subject matter experts.
